Meet Terry Shintani, M.D., J.D., MPH
Where did you earn your degree and what are your areas of expertise?
Born and raised in Hawaii, I received both my medical and law degrees from the University of Hawaii and later earned my master’s degree in nutrition from Harvard University. In addition to being board certified in preventive medicine, I am certified in traditional Hawaiian healing and formally trained in Oriental medicine, Macrobiotics, and Mind-Body medicine.
What is your philosophical belief about the practice of medicine?
Treat the patient, not the disease. We need to treat the patient as a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual entity and not just as a diagnosis. The most important factor in a person’s health is nutrition, an area that is the most deficient in medical training, but the basis of our most common diseases. Accordingly, a doctor should help maximize the patient’s natural ability to heal, combining the high technology of modern medicine with the low technology natural practices of ancient medicine.
How has the current healthcare model hindered you from practicing medicine?
Patients need a New Paradigm of Health if they are to achieve optimal levels of personal health and increase longevity. This simply cannot be done with the current healthcare delivery model. However, the Club 120+ approach is centered around HEALTHCARE - not just disease care. Our goal is to help patients live healthier longer, reduce medication, and begin to shift the wellness paradigm.
What do you hope your patients will experience/feel joining your membership-style practice?
That my whole-person health program, Club 120+, which includes diet, lifestyle, and spiritual practices combined with medical knowledge, will help them reach their health & spiritual aspirations. After all, if the spirit is not healthy, then the body and mind are not totally healthy either.
